Democracy Moves Advisory Committee

Democracy Moves is led by an Advisory Committee, comprised of members from across the world. The Advisory Committee meets monthly to discuss ongoing initiatives, provide support, and ensure that we are best serving all of our members. They were chosen through a competitive process, and serve one-year terms.

  • Joy Zawadi, Kenya

    Joy is a thinker and storyteller with a knack for strategy. She has a background in marketing and management, with a degree in International Business Administration from the United States International University (USIU) – Africa. Committed to professional development, Joy has over the years built on her academic background, acquiring skills and experience in the areas of development communications, monitoring and evaluation, and organization development. Rooted in her values of growth and continuous learning, her long-term goals are to develop competencies in the areas of advocacy, knowledge management, and policy – critical skills for the advancement of girls and women’s rights on the continent and around the globe.

    Joy finds pleasure in photography, event management, and networking. And holds an inherent ability to interact with ease and create useful and strategic relationships with various stakeholders at different levels of the community.

  • Gabriel Marmentini, Brazil

    PhD candidate and MSc in Administration. Bachelor in Public Administration. Executive Director at Politize! Institute of Civic Education and Brazilian Association of Head and Neck Cancer. Fellow of the Facebook Community Leadership Program (FCLP), Red Bull Amaphiko, Social Good Brasil Lab, Warriors Without Weapons (Instituto Elos) and Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI). Member of the Judging Committee of the Prize for Good Practices in Public Management of Santa Catarina State. Advisor to the global Democracy Moves movement (SNF Agora Institute at Johns Hopkins University).

  • Shomy Hasan Chowdhury, Bangladesh

    Shomy Hasan Chowdhury is a multi-award-winning Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activist from Bangladesh. Shomy is the Co-Founder of global youth-led org Awareness 360, a Global Changemakers Fellow, a US Dept. of State Alumna, a Global Citizen Youth Advocate, the Asia Representative of the Commonwealth Students’ Association, a Royal Commonwealth Society Fellow, Youth Advisory Board Member of Youth Combating NTDs, a certified Commonwealth Leader, Commonwealth Youth Forum 2021 International Taskforce Policy Lead, a Global Youth Ambassador for Theirworld UK, a TEDx Speaker, a Schwarzman Scholar '21-22, and an International Election Observer. She has addressed keynotes and inspired millions across 5 continents. She has received many recognitions for her social work of over a decade, notably the President’s Volunteer Service Award (Gold) from President Barack Obama and the Princess Diana Legacy Award. Most recently she has been titled as a UNDP-Samsung Global Generation17 Young Leader, becoming the first person to hold the recognition from the Asia Pacific region.

  • Derrick Mpagi, Uganda

    Derrick Mpagi is a lawyer with 8 years of experience in the legal, policy and community development sector, specifically focusing on peace, Human Rights and sustainable development. Derrick is also a member of UNOY's (United Network Of Young Peacebuilders) Gender Working Group, and the Founder and Director of MIGHT Foundation (MIGHT), where he focuses on initiating, designing, and implementing, innovative and sustainable peace-building, Human Rights and development activities that benefit minorities within the Uganda. Derrick is driven by a commitment to achieve world peace for all.

  • Damaris Aswa, Kenya

    Damaris Aswa is a grassroots activist championing for community integrity building, civic participation, youth engagement and gender equality and social inclusion matters. She is currently working for Kesho Kenya organisation, a local youth led NGO in Kilifi Kenya whose mission is to advance access to quality education and employment for vulnerable young people living at the coast of Kenya through a long term holistic approach. Damaris is also a co-initiator of Rotaractor Club of Kilifi which falls under the able Rotary Club of Kilifi.

    Through the Students Acting For Honesty Integrity and Equality project funded by NORAD through Integrity Action, she has trained over 100 teachers and over 1,000 students on community integrity building who have in turn monitored various services and infrastructure within the school community to ensure efficiency, effective and sustainable quality service deliveries and infrastructure development. With support from Integrity Action and Accountability Lab, she has been conducting community dialogues that reach over 1000 people in bid to obtain community feedback on what hinders their active participation in governance matters. The information obtained support in advocating for civic participation and to also hold duty bearers accountable. She has participated in various workshops such as community integrity building workshop in Nepal, national education stakeholders forums etc and also organized various forums such as Yourh Forums on their role in the fight against corruption. She is also implementing a For Leaders Of Today And Tomorrow (4LOTAT) project funded by Democracy Moves that aims to enhance civic education, skills and knowledge among youth in Kilifi County. This is to support building a democratic society that embraces good governance structures for betterment of all.

  • John Oluwafemi Olla, Nigeria

    John Oluwafemi Olla is a Social Development Expert with proven experience and vast knowledge in the areas of Environmental Impact Assessment Audit, Social Audit, Training, Capacity development, Research & Analysis, Strategic Development, NGO Management, Entrepreneurship, Project Management and Community Engagement. He has a Bachelor of Education in Economics and Political Science, Masters of Information Science and a Post-Graduate Certificate in Project Management and Entrepreneurship from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He is a YALI Alumnus, SDGs Advocate, Social Audit Community Champion and Certified Microsoft, Innovative Educator Expert.

    He is working to raise active citizens in Nigeria and across Africa through Social Audit and Environmental Impact Assessment Audit. The main aim is to ensure accountability in development projects, compliance to EIA standard and ensure proper compensation for beneficiaries whose properties and livelihood are being affected. His most cherished methods of engagement are onsite engagement, ethnography and tailor-made techniques designed for a specific need. His figures include production of IEC materials on several social issues, produced over 100 citizen budgets, raised over 135 social audit champions, collaborated with over 15 organizations in organizing social change programmers, led his team in conduction researches on citizens’ perception of good governance in Nigeria as well as the Perception Survey On Shrinking Civic Space In Nigeria, had 10 radio engagement programmes on raising active citizens both in Yoruba and English, had carried out 4 Tweetathon; social media advocacy of Act Hub Africa.

    He has published four academic articles and published two books. He is the team lead for Act Hub Africa where he works to ensure good governance and compliance with environmental impact. His main aim is to raise active citizens in Nigeria and Africa alike.
