Date: February 28, 2024

Time: 4 PM EAT, 4 PM CAT
Venue: Zoom

Understanding the Global Electoral Landscape in 2024

In the midst of a pivotal year for global elections, 99 countries are gearing up for electoral contests, involving more than half the world's population and an estimated 1.8 billion potential voters. As highlighted by the International Republican Institute's (IRI) publication "The 25 Elections to Watch in 2024," this year is poised to be the most decisive in electoral history.

The International Republican Institute notes that not all elections will be free or fair, with fraudulent results anticipated in some cases, particularly in dictatorships like Iran and Russia. Fragile democracies face scrutiny, emphasizing the critical role of electoral institutions.

Africa's Electoral Challenges and Opportunities in 2024

In their publication "Africa’s 2024 Elections: Challenges and Opportunities to Regain Democratic Momentum," Joseph Siegle and Candace Cook, from the Africa Centre for Strategic Studies (ACSS), highlight Africa's dynamic election calendar. With 19 countries holding presidential or general elections, the landscape ranges from competitive multiparty contests to perfunctory exercises. They indicate that Southern Africa may witness transitions of power, reflecting a maturation of multipartyism, while Sahelian countries recovering from coups navigate elections crucial to governance and security.
